A group of adventurers wake up in an unfamiliar room with no memory of their identities. The only way to discover who and where they are is by trying out their skills and spells and exploring their surroundings. Can they recover their missing memories and escape the Sunken Keep before it’s too late?

Each player gets a character sheet with scratchcard coating over all their stats. Only when they try out a skill or cast a spell can they scratch off its covering. As they explore, they can find clues and unlock key memories.

The fully illustrated GM’s booklet guides you through the adventure with clear step-by-step information, evocative descriptive text, engaging NPCs and scalable combat encounters – plus everything you need to run the amnesia mechanics.

Retrieve your missing memories and escape the Sunken Keep

You awake sprawled on the hard floor of an unfamiliar cellar. You muzzily try to remember what brought you there, but your memory is full of holes. Try as you might, you can’t remember where you are. Or – you suddenly realise – who you are.

You don’t even know your own name.

Every personal memory is gone: your hometown, your family, your entire life up to this point. Can you handle a sword? Pick a lock? Can you summon magic, and what spell will emerge if you try?

With your memory stolen away, you have no choice but to work with the other amnesiac adventurers around you to find the answers. You must escape this room and explore the perilous Sunken Keep to get your memories back… but will you regret what you learn if you do?

How the amnesia works

The adventurers wake up with no memory of their personal histories. Of course the GM knows everything – it’s explained at the beginning of the adventure booklet – but the player characters don’t know their name, their class or what they’re good at. The only way for the adventurers to learn about themselves is to try out their skills and spells, and to explore their surroundings.

A D&D character sheet for an amnesia game with its stats covered by scratchcard coating
  • Players choose a character sheet whose stats are covered in scratchcard coating
  • They give themselves a name and write it on the sheet
  • There’s room on the reverse of the sheet for them to take notes

Skill checks

  • Players only find out their stats when they use them
  • For a skill check, the player rolls the d20 as normal – and then scratches off the coating on the relevant modifier
  • The same applies to saving throws, weapon attacks and initiative

Using spells

  • Players can use their spells at any time – but won’t know what they’re casting until they uncover the spell’s text
  • Players choose a spell and commit to casting it, and only then scratch off the coating to find out what it is
  • Each player has eight Magic Use slots and they must mark one off whenever they cast a spell
  • Spells are split into ‘Attack & Defense’ and ‘Utility’ sections. So they’re probably not going to accidentally cast Fireball on a party member. Probably.
A page of the amnesia D&D game showing a table of the characters' appearance, clothing and possessions
  • Appearance, clothing and possessions are clearly set out in a table for the GM’s reference
  • They provide the players with the first clues about their amnesiac characters
Memory script pages from an everyone-has-amnesia oneshot game for D&D 5e
  • Characters each have three flashes of memory during the adventure
  • The GM reads them out one by one at trigger points from short scripts
  • The memories gradually build up a picture of who the adventurer is and why they’re there
Three pages from the D&D with amnesia game booklet, with headings reading 'Green backstory', 'blue backstory', 'red backstory', 'orange backstory' and 'purple backstory'
  • If a character succeeds in recovering their memories at the climax of the adventure, the GM reads out their backstory script as their memory returns

We’re planning to launch on Kickstarter once we’ve pinned down all the manufacturing and shipping prices. Please sign up to the mailing list to hear when the adventure kit launches.

The creators

Hi! We’re two independent TTRPG creators who are working together to bring this project to life. The adventure is the brainchild of writer and graphic designer Alison Collantine, who’s teamed up with game author and publisher Jeff Stevens to create this adventure.

Alison Collantine is a writer, graphic designer and puzzle creator.

Alison and Jeff first collaborated in 2023 to create a one-shot, The Puzzling Temple of Flummox Heist, which features nine original escape-room-style puzzles and a clever story twist.

After the success of this Gold bestseller on DMs Guild, Alison wrote two NPCs for Jeff’s Saints and Sinners supplement. Jeff and Alison have teamed up again to create this exciting new amnesia DnD-compatible one-shot.

Alison is based in the UK where she also creates original poster designs for shows and musicals.

Jeff Stevens Games logo

Jeff Stevens is a full-time RPG writer and producer based in the US, with more than 40 D&D adventures, supplements and collections to his name.

He founded Jeff Stevens Games in 2016, and has become known for his high-end story-driven adventures and detailed illustrated D&D supplements.

Jeff has published many five-star rated, Adamantine-bestselling adventures on DM’s Guild, including The Madhouse of Tasha’s Kiss, Happy Jack’s Funhouse and Encounters on the Savage Seas.

He is a Backer Favorite on Kickstarter where he has previously launched eight fully funded projects.

FAQs
Why are you crowdfunding?

Printing the scratch-off sheets is an expensive process at small scale – but it becomes far more affordable per sheet if you print in bulk. We’re two independent TTRPG creators, so we need to make sure we have enough interested purchasers to bring the print costs down to a reasonable level before we commit to printing and shipping.

When will Roll for Amnesia: The Sunken Keep launch?

Our original plan was to launch in 2025, but the uncertain state of tariffs and shipping prices at the moment means that we’re proceeding cautiously. We want to be as sure as can that we can deliver what we promise at the price we list.

The launch may be late 2025 or may move into 2026 depending on how things develop.

Sign up to our mailing list to get project updates and receive an email when the project launches.

What about stretch goals and add-ons?

We’re hoping to offer refill packs of the scratch-off character sheets as an add-on, so you can run the adventure again with a new set of players after your initial playthrough.

We’d love to commission some additional character art for the booklet if we meet our stretch goals.

Do you use AI?

That’s a big No. This project is free from AI involvement. All writing and art in the project is created by humans without any AI intervention.
